Historical overview of the surveillance programs

Denmark has a range of surveillance programmes for e.g. animal feed, poultry-, pig- and meat production. The programmes are a result of EU's Zoonosis Directive 03/99/EEC, Danish legislation and the industries own demand. The surveillance programmes are continuously evaluated not only due to changes in the legislation, but also due to constant increasing knowledge and changing demand. The purpose is to prevent and control food borne infections.

Continuous surveillance
The level of zoonotic infections in humans, animals and foodstuff is under continuous monitoring. Based on results from the surveillance and control programmes, sources of infections are investigated and routes of transmission are uncovered. The surveillance data are available to the public on this web page and published bi-monthly in "Zoonose-Nyt" (Danish). An overview of the data are published and commented in "The Annual Report on Zoonoses in Denmark".

The industries own control
The industries are to a large extend responsible for the monitoring routines connected to the surveillance programmes. The expenses in connection with this monitoring are mostly covered by the industries themselves. The regional veterinary and food control centres are responsible for the inspection and control of the industries.

Historical overview
An overview of the historical development of the monitoring and surveillance programmes is presented. For a more thorough description of the changes for each year between 1994-2004 refer to The Danish Zoonosis Centres annual report, Zoonose-Nyt (in Danish) and The Danish legal information system.
