GMO

Our research into genetically modified organisms (GMO) is linked to the obligation to provide an advisory service to the authority responsible for GMO regulation in relation to food products.

Duties include the evaluation of GMO for food use and advice in relation to EU regulation and guidelines. Our laboratory is also responsible for the implementation and development of control methodology related to GM-food.

Collaborations
The basis for sustaining and keeping up to date the knowledge about GMOs is participation in international working groups under OECD and EU where there are ongoing discussions about the safety issues related to genetic engineering.

The National Food Institute is also obliged to keep up to date with the current knowledge through following literature, public discussions and new regulation proposals and conferences participation. Special focus areas are use of antibiotic resistance genes in GMOs and control criteria for GMOs.
