The Danish National Survey of Dietary Habits and Physical Activity

Short project description
The Danish National Survey of Dietary Habits and Physical Activity has been an essential part of the system for monitoring Danish Foods established by the National Food Agency in 1983. The purpose of the survey is to provide nutritional information as a basis for evaluation of the nutritional status of the Danish population. In addition, the survey is aimed at securing safety of the diet and improving public health in Denmark by following trends in the nutritional status and physical activity within the general population.

Further aims of the survey are to identify social groups with health risk behaviour to be considered for health promotion initiatives, and analyse determinants of dietary habits and physical activity. The data will also be used in epidemiological research to study the association between lifestyle and health.

Since year 2000 data on physical activity has also been collected in the survey. The purpose of giving physical activity a higher priority was:

To draw more attention to the association between diet, physical activity and health, particularly in connection with overweight

To monitor temporal trends and patterns of dietary habits as well as physical activity within the Danish population

To get a more valid estimate of the physical activity level to identify underreporters of dietary intake

Project period
Collection and publication of data has been an ongoing process since year 2000.
