The division of Microbiology and Risk Assessment is engaged in research, consultancy, mapping and reference laboratory activities involving foodborne microorganisms. Our work covers the entire food chain from primary agricultural production through to industrial processing and preparation in the consumer's home.
This includes zoonotic bacteria, foodborne viruses and applied microorganisms, for example, starter cultures, biopreserved microorganisms and microbial disease control agents. We conduct research into the incidence, survival, and virulence of the respective microorganisms.
The division provides advisory services to international and national authorities regarding health risks related to the presence of pathogenic microorganisms. We are also the reference laboratory for the following areas:
Microbiological reference laboratory for Danish public regional food control units and a number of private laboratories |
National reference laboratory for Salmonella and zoonootic E. coli |
National reference laboratory for bacteria and viruses in bivalve molluscs |
National reference laboratory for analysis of milk and dairy products |
EU reference laboratory for antimicrobial resistance |
WHO Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance in Foodborne Pathogens |
EFSA Zoonoses Collaboration Centre | The reference laboratory undertakes the diagnosis and classification of pathogenic microorganisms in conjunction with the Danish national mapping and monitoring programmes. Our laboratory is also involved in R&D for diagnosing and classifying foodborne pathogenic microorganisms, with emphasis on zoonotic bacteria and foodborne viruses.
